I’ve just completed reading all 283 pages of the draft copy of the new Zoning Code for Middletown. This has already been a year and a half process to replace our 1960’s code with the most modern and innovative code in Ohio.
As riveting as reading the zoning code can be, it took me several sittings to get through all of the detail. And by riveting, I mean necessary but incredibly dry and boring, sleep producing reading.
I’m very impressed with the end product. We’ve had lots of city staff, BZA and Planning Commission input into creating a code that not only meets 21st century development and state law, but also that is also tailored to what Middletown is and aspires to be. I think the consultant, staff, and our boards and commission members have done an outstanding job putting this together.
The next step in the process is to send the completed draft to outside counsel that specializes in Ohio zoning law to make sure that our new code is consistent with Ohio law and particularly any new case law interpreting zoning regulations.
This will likely take a few more months of work (it is 283 pages to review), so we are looking at the second half of 2017 to adopt the new code.
